Charanga Cubana

The nine-piece band, composed of musicians from Cuba, specializes in the musical form called charanga, characterized by the flute and violin-based arrangements that have roots in the formal parlor roots of old Havana. Charanga Cubana will have you moving to the soft cadence of Danzon and to the ecstatic pace of Salsa in no time.

Chino Espinoza

Born Mirley Espinoza in the city of Alajuela, Costa Rica, this Los Angeles-based salsa singer/bandleader (better known by his fellow's musicians and fans as "Chino El Salsero") is the new vocal talent of this town. He was raised in a home full of musical love, as his father was one of the leading percussionists in Costa Rica--a talent reflected 100% in Espinoza's younger brother César Espinoza, who is one of the leading percussionists in the Los Angeles Latin music scene, as well as the musical director of Los Dueños del Son. But it was his mother who inspired and passed on the love for singing to a young Chino. "My mother was always singing around the house," he remembers. The great ballad vocalists of Latin America and Spain, like José José and Raphael, influenced Chino's passion for singing, but it was through his father that he carne to love the tropical sounds of El Gran Combo, La Sonora Matancera, Tito Puente, Tito Rodríguez and Machito. By the time he and his brother César carne of age, they where both devoted to the Afro-Caribbean rhythms defined within the umbrella of salsa.

In 1989, Chino arrived in Los Angeles, California, and within a year, he joined the ranks of the Opa Opa International Orchestra, an ensemble led by a fellow Costa Rican, trumpeter Oswaldo Bernard. In 1995, he recorded his first CD as lead vocalist for the band, under the Warner Brothers label. After five years with Opa Opa, he worked with several of the top musical groups in town, including the Malibu Salsa All Stars, The L.A. Jazz All Stars, and several other ensembles formed to accompany many of the top touring artists that annually carne through LA, such as Celia Cruz, Eddy Santiago, Tito Puente Jr., Tony Vega, Domingo Quiñones and Michael Stuart. For many years, he was also the lead singer of the group Son Mayor (a local favorite salsa outfit known for irs high energy and aggressive style of playing). Chino's vocals have been also featured on the recordings of Bobby Rivas, Pete Escovedo, Bette Midler, Los del Barrio, Orquesta Cañizal (from Colombia) and Rumba Grande, (where he sang with Camilo Azuquita, Cali Alemán and Bebo Moré, among others).

Son Mayor

Son Mayor features 12 of L.A.’s hottest latin musicians playing a mixture of vintage latin and contemporary Cuban styles. The band was begun in 1988 by the Ortiz brothers. From humble beginnings, this musical family has made Son Mayor one of L.A.’s most sought-after salsa bands, opening for and playing alongside such greats as Chucho Valdez at the Hollywood Bowl; Tito Puente, Celia Cruz, Los Van Van, Sonora Ponceña, Oscar D'León, El Canario, Ozomatli, and Los Muñequitos De Matanzas.

In 2001, Son Mayor was invited by Jennifer Lopez to play at her wedding in Calabasas, California, performing before an exclusive audience. The band continues to perform for countless corporate events and special occasions, and can be heard in such well-known premier salsa clubs in L.A. and San Francisco as the Conga Room, the Century Club, Mama Juana's, Steven’s Steakhouse, and Granada. Not surprisingly, LA Weekly voted Son Mayor as "Best Salsa Band" in its annual Best of L.A edition.

Tabaco y Ron

Orquesta Tabaco Y Ron is the most exciting Salsa band today. Their high-energy, hard-edged brand of salsa music has appealed to devoted salsa dancers and Latin music DJ's worldwide. OTR is a 12 piece "Big-Band" orchestra, composed of musicians from all over Latin America including Puerto Rico, Cuba, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia and Mexico. OTR's stunning rhythms create a contagious energy that revives the almost extinct salsa sound of generations past.
Since 2000, Orquesta Tabaco Y Ron has recorded four studio albums and one remix compilation for Dimelo! Records. These recordings were accepted with positive and gratifying reviews by new and old fans, earning them numerous tours to various cities and countries. Their arsenal of hard salsa tracks has gained OTR recognition and respect by tropical music aficionados worldwide.
HECTOR MANUEL RIVERA
Hector Manuel Rivera has produced and arranged all five Orquesta Tabaco Y Ron productions. He has solely recorded, engineered and mastered the majority of their releases. He is also the piano player, band leader and is known to his fellow musicians as "El Pianista Del Barrio." Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Hector Manuel discovered his passion for music at the age of nine while being inspired by such artists as the Sonora Ponceña and Papo Luca on the piano. These great artists influenced the young aspiring musician to become fascinated by the sound of salsa music, later triggering him to become obsessed with the piano. Hector Manuel would eventually claim the piano as a musical weapon of his own.
MARTIN PADILLA
Martin Padilla, the distinct lead vocalist of Orquesta Tabaco Y Ron, possesses the power to captivate audiences with his authentic tone. Referred to as “El Sonero del Barrio”, Martin was born in Yaucco, the coffee growing zone of Puerto Rico. His musical style was greatly influenced by the old-school salsa greats such as Willie Colon, Johnny Pacheco, Sonora Ponceña, and other legendary Fania heavies. Martin is an essential part of the make-up of OTR. His influence can be heard on all the bands songs, through original compositions and amazing improvisations, also known as “soneos”.
